Christmas sign

I was reading one of my favorite DIY blogs The house of Smiths and in one of her tutorials she introduced the beautiful work of Dee Kasberger at The Red Letter Words. I loved her work and it inspired me to try to make one.

I started with some left over 2 x 4s that I cut to 26″ and glued together with wood glue.

Once that was dry I glued another piece to the back and then added some screws.

I knew I wanted to sand and distress the sign and I wanted some cream color showing through on the edges, so I painted the edges with a brown color. Once that was dry I added some Vaseline to the edges with a cotton ball for the larger areas I wanted distressed (like the corners) and I used the Q-tip for some random small sections in the middle. I got this great Vaseline tip from the awesome girls at Shanty 2 Chic.

I then painted all of it including the side black and once that was dry I taped a line across and painted the bottom white (the white took a couple of coats).

I used some painters tape to tape off the black sections of the nativity.

I painted the inside section white and removed the tape. I also took the foam brush and added lines to the outside of the nativity to create the roof.

I created a template for the words using vinyl and my Cricut. The font is from the Lyrical letters cartridge.

I then took some sand paper and sanded it down till I got the look I wanted. Here is another look at the results:
